This common assignment is an English Department requirement for all ENGL 101 students. For this assignment you will write an analysis of a person who has had a strong influence or impact on culture/society or who has made profound contributions to culture/society. You must choose one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential persons of 2020 – see attached list at the end of this document. You should have a clear idea as to why you are interested in this person and what more you want to find out about them. Then determine through research what specific influences or contributions this person has made on culture (this will be your thesis). Part I: Inquiry and Research: Annotated Bibliography (50 points)To determine these influences you will need to conduct research to become better informed of this person’s contributions. Find at least three academic sources that broaden your understanding of your topic. These sources must come from CCBC’s Library. Instead of a works cited page, you will create an annotated Bibliography (MLA style) posting entries in alphabetical order for each source that explains what the source is about, how it intersects with the topic you have selected, and how it has helped shape/strengthen your thinking about the issue/topic. Below is a link that offers guidance on how to create an annotated bibliography (The Little Seagull, library guides, or OWLs also offer this information and guidance):https://irsc.libguides.com/mla/annotatedbibliographyBrainstorming/Pre-Writing Activity: To generate ideas, consider the following questions: • What are the values of this person and how does this person promote specific values?• What makes this person important enough to be on this list of most influential persons? • How does this person contribute to and actively shape cultural ideals and expectations?• How does this person support/challenge/revise conventional ideas, practices, or expectations?• What is this person’s role in society?Part 2: Create and Explain an Image, Video, or Creative Work (50 Points) In Part Two, you will find and embed an image, a video, or an artistic representation that relates to the person you identified in Part 1 and to your thesis. You may find the image in any platform (Google for instance), or create your own, but the image must be embedded (either as a link or the image itself) within your written essay in a place that relates to a point you want to make. Then, in a written analysis of about 300 words, analyze your process using following questions: • Why did you make the choices you did in including this image? What strategies did you use to attach the image to the person/contributions you identified as your main focus? • What does the image mean to you and what do you think it might mean to a viewer/reader?• What does the construction of the image communicate about your chosen person? What symbols or cultural understandings are accessed in this image? • What ideas about your topic/person are illustrated in the image, and why do those matter? • Utilize an interdisciplinary lens to think about what is communicated/captured in the image. What does your image mean for a Humanities scholar? Sociologist? Gender/Women’s studies scholar? Do these perspectives clash and, if so, how and why?• What do you hope the image will make people think, feel, or react about your person and how might you explain that shift in reaction? • How did your research on your person inform your choice of the image? Where does the research show up in your image?Part 3: Working with Words (Composing a Piece of Writing)When you were crafting your image, you were making deliberate choices about how to compose your ideas visually. In the third part of this assignment, you will use what you discovered from the process of researching and creating the image to compose a piece of writing (no fewer than 700 words) that centers around what you want to address about this person and the impact they have had on society and why those contributions matter. Audience and purpose: Consider who would be interested in this person and why. Your purpose is not only to inform them about your person, but to teach them something new about this person, to persuade them to agree with your assessment, and to urge them find out more about this person and their causes, and the importance of their values/contributions to culture. As each piece of writing should have an audience and purpose, you should consider using one of the following approaches: • call for action• ask for help (from those in power, for those impacted, etc.) • incite action • make a point • open up a debate • state a position • offer a solution • seek an answer • change minds • sway actions Thesis: As with the previous essays you’ve written, you must construct a clear thesis that includes 2 parts – observation (mention your person and that they have had a significant impact on society and insight (mention the specific contributions that person has made to make a significant impact on society/culture). (See “Writing Process” PPT).Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence related to one of the points in your thesis, a transition, and discuss a specific influence/impact that this person has had on culture. You need to use specific examples and support your ideas with library sources (cited in the text, of course).A conclusion that relates to your audience and purpose.Sources: • Utilize a search strategy and use library databases to locate appropriate academic sources.• You may use only academic sources from CCBC’s library databases.• When utilizing sources in your paper, remember to integrate sources smoothly, supplying source introductions and clarifying comments as needed. Remember, too, to quote judiciously, employing paraphrase and summary when appropriate. • Document sources in parenthetical citations using MLA style format.ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS
