Contributions to the discussion forums in Weeks 2, 4 and 6 only will form Part 1 of the Portfolio.Week 2 discussion: You are asked to discuss the relevance of a strategic vision for an organisation and the importance of setting strategic and financial objectives using Google as an example.Week 4 discussion: You are asked to apply Porter’s Five Forces Framework to analyse and compare the advertising industry and the industry of an organisation of your choice, identify the critical drivers of success in both industries, and discuss the relevance of international strategy while making reference to the achievement of competitive advantage and geographic scope and international mode of entry.Week 6 discussion: You are asked to review the strategies employed by Amazon to achieve competitive advantage, discuss strategies employed by an organisation of your choice to achieve a competitive advantage and explain whether the strategy employed by Amazon could work with the organisation discussed.Within your discussion posts, ensure that you show evidence that you have evaluated, assessed, and developed your understanding, skills and mind-set linked to strategy making and the related issues. Please ensure that you have engaged with and critically analysed the literature by including citations in your contributions. The word count for your work should be as below:200 words for the primary postthe following posts should be sensible in size and content (no binary answers) and no more than 130 words. You should read the instructions for each week carefully (especially regarding the timing of each post) and respond to the discussion questions provided. Please note that you are encouraged to upload more than the required posts to enable the effective co-production of knowledge within each week.Besides, the more you engage with your peers, the more flexibility you will have, since you will have more choices regarding the follow-up contribution that you will select and include with your initial response when preparing your final assignment Part 1.Add your contributions to the discussions on Canvas in Weeks 2, 4 and 6.For Part 1, copy and paste 1,000 words (+/-10%) from your own posts during Weeks 2, 4 and 6 only (330 words from each week. Additionally, include the date and time of each post. The following Assessment Criteria Grid is provided to help you understand how your discussion contributions will be assessed.
Part 2 – Case study essay (MO 1,2,3 and 4)Description of Assessment Task and Purpose:The case study essay accounts for 70% of the module grade and should have a word count of 2,500 words (+/-10%).The purpose of this assessment is to assess your knowledge of the subject area and employ strategy making models and concepts in the analysis of the strategy of an organisation. In your final assignment Part 2, you will, in the hypothetical role of a consultant to senior leadership, prepare and submit a business strategy study to the management of your selected organisation.Your Case Study Essay will provide an in-depth set of analyses, based on work you have done in Units 1 through 7, of an organisation current strategic position. The case study essay should be based on an organisation. Ideally, this will be the organisation that you are currently engaged with as you will not only be familiar with the organisation but have access to data and information which can inform your case study. However, it is also possible for you to choose another organisation. You may, for example, choose a previous organisation that you were involved with or a well known organisation or an organisation with which you are familiar as a customer or a supplier, etc. and which you can get access to information which will allow you to meet the assessment criteria. Please note that you may select a non-profit or a non-governmental organisation (NGO). Regardless of the organisation, you will need access to information to complete the assignment. The case study essay will also provide a comprehensive set of recommendations and action plans, with supporting reasoning and evidence. The case write-up will be guided by a set of questions the student is expected to answer, similar to the case study discussion questions that will be covered within the Discussion Board activities. The case write-up should be 2,500 words (+/-10%), including any exhibits, tables and figures, excluding eventual reference list. It (both sections) must be submitted as a single document using Microsoft Word. As a student of the University of Lincoln, you will have access to Microsoft 365.In general, there is no single correct answer to a case analysis. The key to a good case analysis is to carefully analyse the situation, apply relevant conceptual materials (and reference it), and evaluate choices before presenting your own recommendations. Although each case is unique and may require a different approach and analysis, your case write-up should include the following elements:Part 2 A: (A Strategy Report of the Organisation) – 1,500 words (+/-10%)Perform internal and external strategic analysesAnalyse the context in which the firm operates (the industry)Assess the competitive situation and review the current strategy of the firm, including its financial results, (or/and other relevant benchmarks) with the objective of identifying the key issues (problems) that must be addressed. This is not a summary of the information presented in the case text, but rather your personal evaluation and/or critique of the situation using the relevant tools mentioned in the readings and class presentations/discussions.Conduct a qualitative or quantitative assessment of the situation/performance of the firmPart 2 B: (Potential Alternatives and Strategy Recommendations) – 1,000 words [+/-10%].Based on the outcomes of the analyses performed in part 1, identify strategic alternatives or options to address the issues identified, select the strategic option that you consider the most appropriate.Provide recommendations and action plan to implement the chosen strategy. This is a very important and potentially the most difficult part of the case analysis. The search for alternatives must be broad and should consider significant redirection, reorganisation or disposition of parts or all of the business. Also, changes in business and competitive strategies are expected here.In determining the case (organisation) to be explored, please ensure that you will have access to key information such as the organisation’s current strategy, products, financial performance and annual reports.
