Prior to beginning work on this assignment, please review the assigned material in your Stojkovic and Lovell (2019) textbook. Additionally, please read the article Toward a More Constitutional Approach to Solitary Confinement: The Case for Reform. As you recall, Week 1 had you prepare an outline to provide a foundation for this week’s assignment. For this assignment, you will develop your outline into a two-to-three-page paper. MY Disucssion I did.The six major correctional aims or goals are retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation, reintegration, and restoration. (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019). All six of these have pros and cons to them. The four I am going to use are retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Retribution is a response to criminal misconduct. It goes by the principle of “The punishment should fit the crime” (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019). This can be by placing the accused in prison by punishing them with deprivation of liberty or by monetary sanctions on the accused. The pros for this treatment works on certain individuals. Every person needs to be treated differently because of their background. The same punishment cannot be used on a person who has a lot of money compared to an individual who doesn’t.Deterrence is another correctional goal when sentencing individuals. Deterrence is used to send a message to the offender and to society (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019). By placing sanctions on the offender that fit the criminal offense, can place a perception on society, meaning if you decide to commit criminal behavior this could happen to you. It gives society the idea of free will, to make choices, and to think about their actions. The issue with this it will not resolve the behavior from happening again (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019). Rehabilitation is an attempt to change the offender’s behavior by programming them to become a law-abiding citizen. It addresses these behaviors by teaching the inmate of other ways to handle situations they might be in. The problem with rehabilitation is that the offender can go back to his old ways when they are placed in a situation without structure. Rehabilitation is a Band-Aid to criminal activity. It teaches them how to overcome their issues but not always resolve it in the future. This is one of the reasons why recidivism is so high.Reintegration is based on going back into the community or society and being a productive citizen. The downfall with reintegration are similar to the other goals and that is not all offenders or inmates will accept this way of living.Compare and contrast at least one function of a historical correctional system with at least one function of a contemporary correctional system. The United States established the prison system in 1891 (“The History of Corrections in America”, 2022). It has gone through many changes since even then. Historical correctional systems are the origins of the correctional system and how they became what they are today. During the middle age’s imprisonment was used to hold offenders for trial. Not for punishment. The contemporary correctional system now uses imprisonment as a punishment to help program the offender back into society or to keep him from breaking the law. An imprisonment is a tool used to help maintain the good order of society.Describe correctional system functions that relate to (select at least one)Punishment, rehabilitation, treatment, or supervision. One of the correctional system functions that I know from my personal experience which relates to one of the functions is supervision. As a correctional officer, I am conducting rounds every thirty minutes not to exceed forty-five minutes within the hour. For example, if it 1600 hrs. I will conduct a round at that time and then another at 1630 hrs. Each round cannot be any longer than forty-five minutes apart. Another one would be when inmates are on work details. As a correctional officer, we have to supervise the inmate and make sure he or she is doing the job correctly and not trying to escape.ReferencesThe History of Corrections in America.
