The purpose of this assignment is to learn about a variety of instructional practices that benefit allstudents,as wellas students with disabilities. This assignment
has eight steps to complete as follows:
1. View the video Pulling It All Together: Creating Classrooms and Schools That Support
Learning at http://ediv.alexanderstreet.com.ezproxylocal.library.nova.edu/view/1828159 (in The Learning Classroom: Theory Into Practice series by
Annenberg Learner, 2003, 28:23 mins.). This video provides an introduction to the need to use multiple instructionalstrategies with students.

2. Most school districts will provide a resource that recommends instructionalstrategies for students with disabilities. For example, Broward County School
District provides Instructional Designs: A Resource Guide for Teachers of Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities

with disabilities at your school district’s Web site.

4. Next, link to Teaching Strategies for Students with Disabilities
(http://www.palmbeachschools.org/ese/documents/TeachingStrategiesforStudentswithDisibilities.pdf) that has been developed by the School Board of Palm
Beach County. Read this booklet and take notes on which practices are the most useful in your current teaching setting by answering the following
questions:
How can you apply the I.N.C.L.U.D.E. model in your classroom? How does it meet the needs of the age group or grade level that you teach? Provide a
specific example that incorporates each of the elements in the I.N.C.L.U.D.E. model (e.g., how do you identify classroom environmental,curricular,and
instructional demands).
Review The Essential Nine.? Select an activity that you have used in your classroom recently and consider how you could have applied each of The
Essential Nine strategies to improve instruction in that activity.

5. Next, visit the IRIS Learning Strategies Modules SRSD: Using Learning Strategies to Enhance Student
Learning (http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/srs/). This module will help you to follow the SRSD Model (Self-Regulated Strategy Development) that
presents the six steps required to implement an instructionalstrategy.

6. Click Challenge and view the video to develop an understanding of the need to implement instructionalstrategies. Be sure to consider the challenge from
the perspective of the age level or grade level that best describe the children with whom you work. (Note that a transcript is also available for your
review.) Jot down your thoughts on the questions provided:
Why do you think Mr. Carter’s students are having difficulty in remembering what he has taught them?
What advice would you give Mr. Carter?
What procedures might Ms. Lin suggest?

7. Click Next to review Perspectives & Resources for ideas on how to address these problems. Compare these suggestions to your ideas.

8. Scroll to the bottom of Perspectives & Resources and review and compare the characteristics of strategic learners and non-strategic learners. Continue to
click Next and note the steps for Self-Regulated Strategy Development.

9. Using this module and other sources from the Internet,analyze the instructional needs of a student in your classroom (FL DOE ESE 3.1, 3.4), identify
instructionalstrategies that could be applied (FL DOE ESE 3.3) and the process of differentiating and accommodating the student (FL DOE ESE 3.5),
and apply the steps of the Self-Regulated Strategy Development to this need. Use information gained from the IRIS module, Teaching Strategies for
Students with Disabilities,and other resources (FL DOE ESE 3.2) to describe how they meet the needs of the children in your classroom.
