Process – Submit one substantive initial post, responding to the prompts below, no later than midnight on Wednesday. (Please note that the forum closes at midnight on Sunday, so the due date listed reflects Sunday’s date. However, in order for you to engage in discourse with your classmates, you must submit an initial post by Wednesday). – After posting, you will be able to see what your classmates have posted. Read and reply to your peers frequently throughout the remainder of the week, creating significant back-and-forth dialogue. The goal is to keep the conversation going for a deep exploration of concepts. A minimum of two peer responses is required. – If you make a claim or statement of something as though it is fact, you must provide the evidence to back it up. Use APA format for all citations. No need to double-space/indent in the online forum for reference lists. – A suggested format for responding to your classmates is: make a comment, share a compliment, make a connection (between your insights and theirs/others), and then ask a question. This works well to keep the discussion going. – Refer to the Online Engagement Expectations in the Student Support module for additional guidance. Discussion Instructions and Prompts Remember to do all of the Prep Work listed on the Prep Work page for this module. Then, engage in discussion, using these prompts to get you started: (1) Describe what you experienced when you engaged in the 3 minute exercise, where you attempted to keep your focus directed on your breathing. How often did your mind wander away? What types of distractions made it hard to do? (2) Apply this to your work as a nurse. Imagine you are at the bedside, caring for a patient (including setting up IV medications and performing assessments), but your mind keeps wandering away. You also trying to keep track of charting that needs to be done, a call you need to make to a doctor, preparing one patient for discharge and another for a surgical procedure, and so forth. How can it help you practice safe care, to train your brain to be able to focus mindfully on the present moment? Give examples. (3) Finally, apply this to how it could benefit patients. Imagine you have a patient that is in pain and also anxious about their illness. How can you guide patients to acknowledge their pain and anxiety, but to also identify and focus on other sensations or thoughts? What might be a way to teach patients about mindfulness? No need to cite anything for this week’s discussion, simply engage in the 3-minute practice exercise per the Prep Work page, and then discuss the above with each other throughout the week. Remember, first post due by Wednesday, and at least two more follow-up posts between then and Sunday.
