Accurately explaining medication to patients and/or their caregivers is crucial for all prescribers. While there are many pre-made consent forms that can be given to a patient and their family, the prescriber should expect to offer a verbal explanation as well. Remember, most patients do not have the medical knowledge that you have. So, when they read pre-made consent forms, they may be overwhelmed, confused, or scared. It is the prescriber’s duty to offer an explanation of the medication, the goal of the medication in that particular patient, and potential side effects.
In this assignment, you will practice seeking consent for an antipsychotic. Even if you do not plan on prescribing these agents, you will still complete this assignment. You will utilize Kaltura to submit your assignment. In your video, you may choose any first or second generation antipsychotic to seek consent. However, please see below for specific instructions on whether you will be 1) seeking consent to begin an antipsychotic in an adolescent 2) seeking consent for a LAI (long acting injectable), or 3) seeking consent to begin an antipsychotic in a geriatric patient. Your audience may be the patient OR the patient’s caregiver. Discuss what the medication will be targeting, the dose you plan to start, key side effects/consideration for the patient, monitoring or tests that need to take place, and alternatives. Instructions:
Prepare a “speech” of what you would say to a patient/caregiver to obtain consent for an antipsychotic of your choice – keeping in mind your assigned circumstance (see above for assignment).
Record your video
Your assignment should be a video with audio
Look directly into the camera and pretend you are addressing your patient or patient’s family
This presentation should be no longer than 3 minutes.
Upload your video to Kaltura and submit through the assignment link (Follow directions in the Using Kaltura resources below)
Respond to two (2) peers.
At least one response should be to a peer that was assigned a different circumstance.
Responses can be video or written. Video responses should not exceed 2 minutes in length.
At least one scholarly reference should be included with each response. References are only required for peer responses.
