Why?What is the purpose of a museum? What is its function in society? Give at least one example of a museum that does its work well.What should a public monument or memorial do? What is its role? If a monument no longer represents the values of a society, should it be changed or removed? Why or why not?Explain the differences between a scholarly historical work (such as an article or book), a museum, a monument/memorial, and a commemorative event such as Veteran’s Day or Columbus Day. How do each of these contribute to historical narrative creation? Who should have the authority to decide what stories are told?Explain how museums, monuments, history books, and commemorative holidays shape the identity and values of a society. In what way does our retelling of the past determine who we are now, and who we will become?Papers should cite at least four resources used in class (museum websites, articles, etc.), as well as three additional relevant sources (outside of those used in class—students should research and find these on their own. These may include the museums or monuments that students have visited themselves). These papers should be 1500-1800 words in length. Final papers should contain footnotes and bibliography in either Chicago or MLA format, whichever the student is more familiar with. Please be very careful not to plagiarize, as plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 for this assignment. The Chicago and MLA Manuals are available in electronic form on the Brown Library website. The research paper is worth 200 points.
