Clinical Post-Conference Journal Club
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to develop evidence-based practice leading to improved patient outcomes and to promote student exploration and evaluation of current literature surrounding relevant evidenced-based practice. Journal club also facilitates promoting team building through the sharing of knowledge and students will begin to acquire enhanced literature critiquing and socialization skills that encourage collegial interaction and dialogue with peers.
Background:
In an effort to develop evidence-based practice leading to improved patient outcomes, several barriers such as the lack of knowledge, support, time, and authority to change practice plagues the nursing profession and must be addressed (O’Nan, 2011). Activities that can help overcome barriers and incorporate research findings into practice is demonstrated with a post-conference nursing journal club. A journal club can be described as “the sharing of contemporary knowledge and appraise the value of that knowledge for applications in clinical practice” (Duffy, Elpers, Hobbs, Niemeyer-Hacket, & Thompson, 2011, p. 424).
Directions:
The leader/facilitator of Journal Club is the assigned clinical instructor. Each student will present one current, no more than 5 years old, peer-reviewed nursing research article relevant to the clinical rotation and/or any topics deemed appropriate by your clinical instructor.
Pick a subject or interest, discuss and get approval from your assigned clinical instructor before filling out your grading rubric. Your clinical instructor will assign the due dates based on the clinical rotation needs.
Read the article; is it relevant to your education? Is it peer-reviewed? Is it evidence-based practice? Is it current, within five years? Is it interesting?
Be prepared to discuss your article for at least 15 minutes. Be prepared to answer question and try to choose a subject that will evoke questions and discussion with your peers.
Discussing an article for 5 minutes with no audience engagement does not promote clinical reasoning and critical thinking, the objective is to share and gain knowledge on evidence-based practice in nursing.
The rubric identifies the objectives; follow it closely for a successful presentation. Please provide two copies, with attached rubric, of article to your clinical instructor.
