This source explores how ethnicity and race affect mental health. In addition, it considers the case of anxiety, further assessing how these two factors shape an individual’s willingness to seek help. Thus, the researchers selected college students from a medium-sized Midwestern university. The researchers used a 40-item questionnaire in an online survey hosted on Qualtrics. 100 participants responded to the initiative. This tool collected demographic data and used a Modified (PHQ-M) test for major depressive disorder and a GAD-7 scale to test for generalized anxiety disorder. It also collected information on the participants’ knowledge of mental health resources in the institution and whether the students were willing to see help from these facilities. This data was analyzed using the GraphPad Prism, ANOVA, and Fisher’s exact test. The results showed no difference in susceptibility to anxiety and knowledge of available facilities where they could get help. However, Caucasian individuals were more willing to seek assistance than individuals from other ethnic groups. This difference significantly affected mental health across different ethnic and racial groups.
Krill Williston, Sarah, Jennifer H. Martinez, and Tahirah Abdullah. 2019. “Mental health stigma among people of color: An examination of the impact of racial discrimination.” International Journal of Social Psychiatry 65(6): 458-467.doi:10.1177/0020764019858651.
This source explores the impacts of racial discrimination, how people perceive mental health, and the stigma surrounding these conditions. The study draws from the observable underutilization and low quality of mental healthcare available to people of color. As a result, it conducted an experiment in which 205 individuals that identified as people of color enrolled at a major public university in New England as students. These parties then completed an online survey that used the Endorsed and Anticipated Stigma Inventory to assess beliefs on mental health, the Generalized Ethnic Discrimination Scale to capture data on discrimination experiences, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale to assess psychological distress. The data was then evaluated using regression analysis to reveal insights into beliefs about mental health problems, available treatments, willingness to seek help, and the expected stigma from having these issues. The results showed that individuals who experienced discrimination recently were more likely to anticipate stigma for having a mental health issue. In addition, these parties also had a higher chance of possessing negative beliefs about these conditions. Thus, it was concluded that racial discrimination played a significant role in the willingness to seek mental health assistance and increased the stigma surrounding these issues.
